The Dangers of the Trendy Carnivore Diet

The carnivore diet has gained significant attention in recent years, largely through social media, where dramatic weight-loss stories, improved skin, and claims of better digestion can make the diet appear incredibly effective.

There may be a simple reason some people initially feel better: the carnivore diet eliminates a large number of foods at once. Foods containing gluten, soy, corn, refined sugar, highly processed ingredients, and other potential dietary triggers are often removed completely. For someone who was previously consuming a heavily processed diet—or who happens to be sensitive to certain foods—this dramatic simplification may temporarily reduce bloating, digestive discomfort, or other symptoms.

But feeling better in the short term does not necessarily mean that an extremely restrictive diet is the best long-term strategy.

Your Body Needs More Than Protein and Fat

The human body relies on a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and plant compounds to function optimally. A diet made almost entirely of animal foods dramatically limits the diversity of nutrients and plant-based compounds available to the body.

Healthy carbohydrate-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, potatoes, legumes, and whole grains can provide important nutrients, fiber, and glucose. Glucose is a major source of energy for the brain and body, and carbohydrates can be part of a balanced and nourishing diet.

The goal should not be to fear carbohydrates, but to distinguish between highly refined carbohydrates and nutrient-rich whole-food sources.

What About Weight Loss?

Some people lose weight quickly when beginning a carnivore diet. This can happen for several reasons. Eliminating processed foods dramatically reduces food choices, carbohydrate intake drops, stored water may decrease, and total calorie intake may fall without the person intentionally restricting calories.

While these changes can produce noticeable short-term results, weight loss alone does not tell us whether a diet is supporting long-term health.

A sustainable approach should consider much more than the number on the scale. Digestion, energy, cardiovascular health, nutrient intake, hormonal health, sleep, mood, and a person’s relationship with food all matter.

The Concern With Long-Term Restriction

A strict carnivore diet typically provides little or no dietary fiber and very limited plant diversity. It can also be high in saturated fat depending on the foods chosen.

Long-term dietary patterns that exclude entire food groups may make it more difficult to obtain a broad range of nutrients and may not be appropriate for everyone.

This is particularly important because the consequences of an extreme diet may not be obvious after a few weeks or months. Seeing a young, seemingly healthy person thriving on social media does not tell us what their health will look like after many years of following the same restrictive pattern.

Short-term appearance should never be confused with proof of long-term wellness.

Why The Golden Cleanse Takes a Different Approach

At The Golden Cleanse, we believe the goal should not be to move from one extreme to another.

Instead of eliminating nearly every plant food, we focus on removing or reducing highly processed foods while increasing nutrient-dense whole foods.

That means emphasizing:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables

  • Leafy greens

  • Potatoes and other nourishing carbohydrates

  • Whole grains and legumes when tolerated

  • Appropriate sources of protein

  • Hydration

  • Healthy lifestyle habits

  • A less processed living environment

Rather than asking, “What entire food group should I eliminate?”, a better question may be:

“How can I give my body more of what it needs while reducing the things that consistently make me feel worse?”

True wellness is rarely created by an extreme diet or a temporary trend. It comes from building sustainable habits that nourish the body over time.

Your body needs variety. It needs nourishment. And most importantly, it needs an approach you can realistically maintain for years—not simply a diet that produces impressive results for a few months.

The Golden Cleanse philosophy is simple: remove what is holding you back, nourish what helps you thrive, and create habits that support your health for the long term.
